Nsekuye from Deceased Gorillas

About Nsekuye

26 Dec 2008

Nsekuye was a member of the Kabirizi Family when she was brutally murdered in June 2007. Here she is pictured below with her infant Kabila who remains in the family today.

Nsekuye had 4 children: Janja, Kayenga, Ruzuzi and Ndakasi

Nsekuye was the grandmother to Bonane and Kwibesha and was also the largest female in the Kabirizi family. She would often remain behind in the group to protect the other gorillas.

We could always recognize her easily not just because of the size of her body, but also of her belly, which after so many children was quite large! Despite her protective nature she was always calm, which makes her slaying even more dreadful as she would probably not have confronted her attackers.

The autopsy was carried out by the Gorilla Doctors at Rumangabo. I am on the left.

May she rest in peace in Rumagabo, where she is buried with the victims of the July 2007 massacre in the Rugendo family.
